Every Dominican Superhuman in Comic Books

Spoiler Alert: there is an unfortunate lack of superhumans of Dominican Republic-descent. While we’ll take a look into the handful of superhumans from the country, this does go to show that we are in serious need of representation for the different Latinx cultures in the world.

Not to mention that two of the five listed below are villains, and three of the five don’t have any superpowers per se (I mean, Batman is considered a superhero, right?). Marvel, DC, and every other comic book publisher, I sincerely urge you to step up and create more superheroes from the Dominican Republic. And every other Latinx country and island while we’re at it. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the current list of Dominican superhumans:

Windeagle (Hector Ruiz)

  • Publisher: Marvel Comics
  • First Appearance: Jungle Action Vol 2 #24 (Nov 1976)
  • Created by: Don McGregor, Rich Buckler, Keith Pollard, and Ed Hannigan
  • Powers: Anti-gravity costume which enabled Ruiz to fly
  • Bio: The only son of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, Ruiz fell into a life of crime and drugs. After escaping prison, Ruiz was given a suit similar to the Falcon’s costume and eventually finding himself coming to blows with the Black Panther. In an…
